Historic Barbados

For those interested in the island’s history, the wonderful Jacobean St Nicholas Abbey, now with its own heritage railway, is a great way to start. As an added bonus, you can see rum being distilled in the traditional way.
Visit George Washington House to delve into the fascinating story of this young man who was later to become the first president of the USA.  Find out about his trip to Barbados and how the course of history could have been changed but for a case of smallpox and a good doctor.  The secret Garrison tunnels, only discovered in 2011, start from this house too and part of the network of tunnels is open for you to experience.
Barbados Museum and the Garrison Historic Area offer further insights into our interesting past, as do the parish churches – or of course, you could just ask Mike!

Natural Barbados

For the nature lovers there are hundreds of picturesque beaches on the island and diverse fauna and flora in places such as Orchid World, Flower Forest and Hunte’s Garden. Travelling inland to these places, you may see the country’s rich agricultural area, locally called ‘the bread basket,’ many fields of swaying sugar cane and the indigenous and aptly named black belly sheep.
You could take a stroll in the rainforest areas of Turner Hill Woods or Welchman Hall Gully, looking out for frogs, toads, birds and butterflies as well as the incredible variety of trees from all over the world.  There’s so much to look at, smell and enjoy as you wander amongst these botanical treasures.

Mix it up!

For something a bit different, go to watch the whole fascinating process of hand made cigars. These skilled women explain each step from drying the tobacco to boxing them up - interesting even for the non-smoker.
Mount Gay Rum Distillery is another not-to-be-missed tour with tasters to try out the different rums they produce. It’s always time for rum in Barbados!
Or, one of my particular favourites, Earthworks Pottery, where you can walk around and watch the potters creating each individual piece. I defy you not to buy any of these beautiful creations! Take in the unique art gallery and batik workshop too.
However you decided to spend your day, we’ll oblige.
